Cam Smith explains hilarious story behind wild Masters outfit

Cameron Smith has revealed the true story behind his eye-catching pre-Masters practice attire that was the talk of the course.

'After a few beers I agreed to it'

In typical Cameron Smith fashion, the Australian has revealed that his eye-catching pre-Masters practice attire was the result of a bit of a laugh “after a few beers”.

The 2022 Open champion made a promising start at Augusta National with a one-under par opening round on Friday morning (AEST) to sit six shots back from leader Justin Rose.

But the talk of the clubhouse afterwards was still the suit jacket he adorned for his tournament eve practice session.

Speaking to Fox Sports’ Paul Gow after his round, Smith decided to shed light on how the much-discussed fashion choice came to be.

Smith caught up with Charlie Schaefer, the founder of Greyson Clothiers, who are the all-Australian LIV team Ripper GC’s new apparel sponsor, in January.

And it did not take much convincing for him to sport a blazer, which is part of the company’s activewear range, during the biggest week on the golf calendar.

“Charlie, the guy who owns Grayson, we had a few beers one night and said it’d be cool if you wore a jacket at The Masters and after a few beers I agreed to it, and I’m a man of my word so I had to stick to it,” Smith said with a laugh.

“It was all right, it actually felt good. It was comfy. It was stretchy.

“Didn’t feel like I was in a blazer so it was good fun.”

The jacket was the latest of Smith’s fashion statements that have been well received on social media.

His iconic mullet has long been a fan favourite, while before the Tokyo Olympics he shaved ‘AUS’ into the side of his head and he always wears maroon on Sundays to pay homage to his home state of Queensland.

It was also the latest story of Smith letting his hair down and enjoying himself over a few beers.

After winning the Open Championship at St Andrews nearly three years ago, he famously said he thought he could fit two beers into the Claret Jug.

Later that year after winning the Australian PGA Championship in his home city of Brisbane, a video went viral of Smith celebrating rewatching his winning putt at the renowned Breakfast Creek Hotel with friends and family.
