Mitchell beaming after historic weekend

The Gold Coast Titans are celebrating an unprecedented weekend – all four of its teams tasted victory across rugby league and netball for the first time in the club’s history.

A triumphant Titans CEO Steve Mitchell said on Monday: “Historically for us it was one of the most successful days for the club.”

The NRLW outfit kicked off the winning weekend with an 18-10 triumph over former Titans club great Steph Hancock and her new side the Dragons. Then the men’s NRL side followed suit with a stunning 21-14 comeback win against the Dolphins.

It was the men's side fourth win in five games as they mount a stirring run at the back end of the season.

Mr Mitchell was particularly thrilled with the round one NRLW win as coach Karyn Murphy’s side sets out to go one better than last season’s heartbreaking grand final defeat.

“They’re a fantastic group, they’re tightly connected, the culture inside that squad’s good, arguably a very strong squad on paper,” Mr Mitchell said.

“They know they’ve got a job to do. The fan base following that we’ve got and the corporate support side just continues to grow because people believe in what Karyn’s bringing to life there.”

In netball, it was a monumental weekend for the respective Titans side as both their Sapphire and Ruby Series outfits progressed to their grand finals. It was a pair of tense affairs. The Titans’ Sapphire side defeated the Sunshine Coast Thunder 52-49, followed by a last-gasp 61-60 thriller over the Brisbane North Cougars for their Ruby Series team.

Mr Mitchell credited the work former world cup-winning Silver Fern and master mentor Temepara Bailey had put into building his club’s netball program.

“I think it’s a reflection of Temepara Bailey and what she’s done with her staff and then the pathways that are plugging into that,” Mr Mitchell said.

“I’m really happy for Temepara. She’s done three seasons of really hard work and now both of the teams have gone through into the grand final, that’s phenomenal for her and a reward for a lot of hard work.

“That community is really excited.”

He added both teams reaching the grand final illustrated the Titans readiness to progress into the elite competition Super Netball space when the time comes.

“When we do lift into a Super side we’ve got everything in place and we know what sits there,” he said.

Both Titans sides will contest their respective grand finals at Nissan Arena this Sunday. For the Ruby squad it’s their second successive decider while the Sapphire group is into their maiden grand final.

On Saturday, a bumper rugby league double-header at CBUS Super Stadium is brewing. The Wests Tigers’ clash with the Gold Coast’s NRLW side will kick off at 12.45pm, followed by a bumper NRL derby showdown between the Titans and the Broncos.

It looms as a finals defining match for both, as the Broncos hopes fade and the Titans slim chances flicker into life.

Mr Mitchell revealed that only 200 tickets were left for the double-header.

“The stadium will be packed, the concourse will be pumping, get along and you’ll have a ball,” Mitchell said.

“The energy inside the stadium will be unsurpassed this year.”
