A FREE virtual running event will replace the Gold Coast marathon this year.

The “exciting” activity will be held in July to compensate participants who were hoping to compete in the annual Gold Coast Marathon on July 4 and 5.

Organisers were tight-lipped on how the event would take place, saying they will release more details “very soon”.

The marathon was officially cancelled yesterday due to COVID-19 restrictions, including restricted gatherings and reduced travel opportunities, which will remain in place until at least 17 August 2020.

Marathon organisers said in a statement planning for the 2021 event, scheduled for July 3 and 4 next year, was already underway.

“It will be a very special and memorable event,” they said.

They are now contacting runners who have already registered for the 2020 Village Roadshow Theme Parks Gold Coast Marathon to refund registration fees.
