RUNNING a half marathon is challenging enough but for V8 Supercar driver Tim Slade this weekend’s event is simply a warm-up before the 29-year-old hits the road for his next race.

The Supercheap Auto Racing Holden driver will put on his running shoes for the 22km event at this weekend’s Gold Coast Marathon, just a week out from the Townsville 400.

GOLD COAST MARATHON: WHY THEY RUN
“It might seem simple to sit and drive around, but you use every part of your body,” he said. “Your legs constantly move around with the pedals, you need a good core because there are lots of G forces with cornering, accelerating and braking, and your upper body wrestles the wheel and gears for hours.

“In the lead-up to the Gold Coast Half Marathon I’ve been doing up to 60km running (per week) and cut back on the amount of cycling I do to around 250km per week, down from 400km.

“I’m training every day and sometimes twice a day.”

It’s not the first time Slade has taken part in the half marathon and said he would keep his regular training going until next Tuesday.

“I did the Gold Coast Half Marathon a couple of years ago when it didn’t clash with the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400 and I did the Cairns Half Ironman last year and a few other little sprint and Olympic distance triathlons as well,” he said.

The Gold Coast Marathon will be held this Saturday and Sunday.
