THE first day of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon kicked off with a drizzle of rain in the early hours of the morning, but it did nothing to deter the thousands of runners and spectators who flooded Southport from 5am.
Early rain cleared to a flawless winter’s day for the 10km Southern Cross University run, the 5.7km Suncorp challenge and the 2 and 4km junior dashes.
The energy from the runners and crowds was contagious this morning, with junior runner numbers so high a national record was broken.
Organisers are hoping for similar conditions for tomorrow’s main event.
