With the highly anticipated GC500 race weekend hitting the track tomorrow, the controversial grid girls may be making a return. See how.

A Gold Coast venue is bringing back one of the most divisive aspects of the city’s major motoracing event – the grid girls.

From the Indy open-wheeler days to the V8 races, the grid girls had historically been a feature throughout the revved up festivities.

The concept has since been abandoned by Supercars however, Artesian Hospitality’s Cali Beach Club venue is bucking the ban and bringing them back for GC500 weekend.

You’ll find them partying atop the club and roaming the Surfers Paradise streets over the weekend for photos.

Artesian Hospitality’s Bree Maloney said she was excited to have the grid girls back.

“Fast cars and beautiful women, it’s a heaven-sent match. Miss Indy was a career catapult for Australian supermodel Jennifer Hawkins,” she said.

“The competition elevated the race for more than two decades, it adds spice and personality to the proceedings.

“Although Indy cars and days of the vivacious grid girls are long gone, the pre and during event hype doesn’t have to disappear.

“Artesian Hospitality is bringing back the sass in spades and abundance of gorgeous girls the city of Gold Coast is famous for.”

Cali Beach Club recently announced the appearance of multi-platinum selling hip-hop artist Illy to send off the GC500 weekend at the official Boost Mobile After Party with the drivers and teams.

The lead-up to race weekend also saw Supercars drivers Andre Heimgartner and Thomas Randle hit the water aboard an ArroJet boat, enjoying the Gold Coast sun and surf.

The Camaro and Mustang drivers took the passenger seat, hitting speeds of up to 80km/h and blasting over waves and flick spinning in an entertaining display to lead into race weekend.

Andre Heimgartner said it was good to get out on the water and that the ride was ‘awesome’.

“I actually used to live here so it reminded me of when I was young on Jetskis floating around,” he said.
