There was a hat-trick, a double from star returning from injury and playing only limited minutes and plenty to cheer as the Waratahs continued to motor towards the opener of the Super W season.
The Waratahs women posted a massive and confidence building 44-0 win over Tokyo Phoenix in their second last pre-season match before the start of Super W.
It was their third win on the trot for the Waratahs who have had only seven points scored against them in the season warm-ups in an ominous warning to rivals.
“The resilience we are showing in defence is creating opportunity in attack,’’ said coach Mike Ruthven.
“But we still need to challenge ourselves.’’
Try-scoring whiz Desiree Miller produced a three-try haul – which included back-to-back tries in the final stanza of the match – as the Waratahs ran rampant against their Sankyu Phoenix rivals who came into the match at Concord Oval off a win over Western Force.
The season comprises five rounds and two weeks of finals rugby.
The Waratahs women will have three double-headers with the men.
In an encouraging sign for the season ahead, Maya Stewart hit the pitch for the first time for the Waratahs after a hamstring injury and made an instant impression.
Stewart chopped in with two tries in her returning match.
NSW’s try scorers were Maya Stewart 2, Desiree Miller 3, Jacinta Windsor, Tatum Bird, Arabella McKenzie 2 each. Conversions: Arabella McKenzie 1/6, Desiree Miller 1/2
The Waratahs first game of the Super W season is against the Brumbies at home.
The opening round kicks off on March 15 with the Force v Rebels match in Perth and will be followed by the Waratahs v Brumbies at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on March 16 and a day later the Reds v Drua match at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane.
