The aquatic centre in the city’s south will get a $6.7m injection to develop a facility that includes indoor pools, dry programming spaces and administration facilities while $5m will be used by council for the Pimpama Sports Hub that will provide an aquatic centre, community centre and tennis centre on the back of a population boom in the north.

GCCC will also use more than $2m to undertake renewal works and purchase equipment for sports venues across the city.

Part of its key initiatives for the coming year include spending $14.9m to acquire land for future sporting and recreation development while the Pizzey Park Skateboard Park will get a $1.15m facelift to make it Olympic standard on the back of the sport’s inclusion at the Tokyo Games.

Grassroots clubs will continue to get support when it comes to the maintenance of turf on fields, with $4.2m to be used in the space.

In total, Gold Coast City Council will spend $291.1m on parks and recreation in 2021-22, a reduction of $53m from the previous year courtesy of the completion or near completion of projects, including the Pimpama Sports Hub ($35.6m) and Miami Aquatic Centre ($8.5m).

The Palm Beach Aquatic Centre is expected to be completed in 2024, with $52m more needed to finish.

Council will spend $66 million to acquire more land for sport and recreation up until 2026-27 while Dixon Reserve, in Pimpama, will get a $13m upgrade to its facilities by 2025 while the Pizzey Park athletics and soccer facilities will get $11m in funding for upgrades between 2026 and 2031.
