Why Adelaide United coach Carl Veart may need to ‘complain more’

A depleted Adelaide United went down to Melbourne Victory on Saturday night, leaving Carl Veart with plenty to contemplate.

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart believes he needs to “complain more” to the referees’ boss after receiving “a lot of apologies” during the season.

Leading the A-League’s poor discipline table with 59 cautions in 21 matches, Veart was particularly angered by the loss of star teenage forward Mohamed Toure.

The France-bound forward dislocated his shoulder during a tackle in the 20th minute in Adelaide’s 1-0 loss to arch-enemy Melbourne Victory at home on Saturday night.

“Maybe I need to complain more, I have had a lot of apologies this year from the referees’ boss (Nathan Magill) because they make mistakes in crucial moments in games that cost us goals and that sets the tone of the game,’’ Veart said.

“When you wonder why things are let go and the other times it’s not.”

Adelaide was hit by the coronavirus pandemic taking out three of its players plus injuries before kick-off.

“You can see it on the replay how the players got a hold of his (Toure’s) arm and pulled it right back and right in front of the referee and linesman … nothing,’’ Veart said.

“Our players get booked for little things all season.

“What the players did to him (Toure) was frightening, one of the players had a hold of his arm and pulled it right back, almost like a chicken wing.

“Nothing was done right in front of the linesman and referee.

“And another, their player almost cuts our player in half, and we have the advantage, and you can still go back and book him, but it doesn’t happen.

“If it’s our player, it happens.”

With Adelaide facing Macarthur Bulls at Coopers Stadium on Friday night, Veart wasn’t sure if Ryan Kitto, Bernardo Oliveira or George Blackwood would be up for selection after the trio tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

However, the pending return of the injured pair centre back Lachlan Barr and Zach Clough could give Veart much-needed options after he was forced to play midfielder Isaias as a stopper on Saturday.

He will also start the Bulls clash without assistant Ross Aloisi who was on the bench for the last time against Victory before reportedly joining Yokohama Marinos in Japan’s J-League.

“It’s (Covid-19) gone right through the club,’’ Veart said.

“It nearly wiped out the whole office staff.

“It’s unfortunate we have done exceptionally well this year (with minimal Covid-19 cases) and hopefully it doesn’t affect us too much at this busy time of the season.”
