More than 100 A-Leagues Women’s players have opted to play in NPL competitions around the country.

Premiership winners, legendary Matildas, rising stars and goal-scoring maestros are among the more than 100 A-League women who will play in NPL competitions around the country.

Despite the extended 22-round season, the majority of A-League players are on nine-month contracts.

When the season ends they don’t receive a pay cheque and have limited access to training, fitness and gym sessions.

Joining an NPL club fixes the problem but players give up their off season before the A-League kicks off again in October.

Premiership-winning Sydney FC players Indiana and Jynaya dos Santos have joined Blacktown Spartans, while teammate Taylor Ray will play for Sydney Olympic FC.

Recently capped Matildas defender Sharn Freier, who was a standout for the Brisbane Roar, has joined her twin sister Laini at Brisbane City.

Legendary Matildas goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri, who played for Melbourne City in the grand final, has joined Bentleigh Greens SC.

And Melbourne Victory and Matildas player Emma Checker wasn’t quite ready to pack away her boots for good after announcing her retirement last month.

Checker, 28, has joined Preston Lions FC after 148 A-League games and eight for Australia.

Melbourne City striker Rhiana Policinia, who scored seven goals in the A-League this season, has igned with Boxhill United FC.

The Bulls FC Academy side almost doubles as the Young Matildas team. It has Avaani Prakash, Peta Trimis, Gemma Ferris and Maddie Caspers in the squad.

NSW club the Macarthur Rams has 10 A-League players.

The NPL mid-season transfer window closed on May 20.
