September 22, 2014: Grand finals pit the best against the best. But on this night Broadbeach delivered a dominant performance to win a third straight Gold Coast Premier League title. Here is this week’s Blast From The Past.
BROADBEACH United have dealt Mudgeeraba Wallabies their heaviest defeat of the season after a 6-0 blowout in the Gold Coast Premier League grand final.
The minor premiers proved unstoppable against a hapless Mudgeeraba side, scoring two goals in the first half followed by a four-goal barrage in the second.
They claimed their third straight Premier League trophy in front of a vocal crowd of 4000 at Broadbeach Soccer Club on Saturday.
Broadbeach coach Lee Vernon said he was proud with how his side played despite missing top striker Russell Miner due to suspension.
“The lads ran out the full 90 minutes and it is a testament to the team to have a player of Miner’s ability out and still have six different goal scorers,” Vernon said.
“Everyone did their job and it was a real well-rounded performance.”
The Wallabies struggled to find their rhythm and often found themselves on the wrong side of decisions in a free-kick-heavy affair.
More than nine yellow cards were handed out during the match and one Mudgeeraba player was sent from the field late in the second half for a tackle on a Broadbeach striker inside the penalty box.

The decision earnt Broadbeach a penalty, which was put away by Dolphins goalkeeper Michael Negrepontis.
Mudgeeraba coach Steve Beever denied the officiating was a major factor in the loss, saying it was more a case of “grand final jitters” than referee decisions.
“I think if the referee stuck to that style every week there would be a lot more red and yellow cards in games but he was fair and Broadbeach deserved to win,” Beever said.

“I think the occasion might have been too much for us.
“We played totally different to how we normally play.”
The win caps off a four-out-of-four performance for the Broadbeach senior club, who also won the reserve grade, veto league 2 and women’s premier league grand finals.
“It is a testament to the club to have four senior teams win both the premiership and grand final,” Vernon said.
