Sydney FC midfielder Max Burgess has been slapped with a two-match ban for his studs-up tackle on Melbourne City star Marco Tilio in the Sky Blues’ A-League semi-final loss at AAMI Park.

With scores still locked at 1-1 following the previous week’s first-leg at Allianz Stadium. Burgess was shown a direct red card for his tackle on Tilio about 20 minutes into last Friday night’s second-leg.

Down a man, Sydney never recovered, with City running riot to win 4-0 on the night and 5-1 over the two legs.

An independent match review panel found Burgess guilty of “serious foul play” and decided the tackle was worthy of an extra game’s ban on top of the mandatory one-match sanction.

Burgess has until 2pm on Wednesday to decide whether to appeal the length of the ban.

At least one game of his suspension can be served in next season’s Australia Cup, which will start before the A-League season begins.

Meanwhile, Adelaide United, whose A-League season also ended in the semi-finals, have parted ways with Spanish midfielder Juande.

Having joined the club in March 2021. Juande made 53 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

In what would be his final match for the club. Juande suffered a broken leg in Adelaide’s 3-3 draw with Melbourne City on January 29 this year.

“This is not the way I would have liked my time to end but I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent the Reds,” the 36-year-old Juande said.

“This season has been incredibly difficult for me after my injury, but I am proud to have been part of such a strong team and I wish them the best for the future.

“For now I will focus on my recovery and come back better than ever.

Reds coach Carl Veart said: “I want to thank Juande for his professionalism and dedication to our club.

“He has worn his heart on his sleeve and given everything each time he’s stepped on to the field. I wish him the best for the next stage of his career and hope to see him return to football as soon as possible.”
