Robina City rebound from 10-0 Gold Coast Premier League loss to beat Broadbeach United 4-2

A week can be a long time in football – just ask Robina City.

A WEEK can be a long time in football – just ask Robina City.

Thumped 10-0 by Surfers Paradise in their first Gold Coast Premier League outing since 2001, the Rabbits showed resolve to hit back in Round 2 on Saturday night with a 4-2 win away to Broadbeach United.

A Brandon Chin double gave the visitors a 2-0 halftime lead before English recruit Adam Bilcock added another after halftime.

Charlie Frentz then pulled one back for Broadbeach but a Shungo Miyamori strike put the result beyond doubt before Alex Finlayson grabbed a late consolation for the Dolphins.

With high-profile signings Dean Wernerson and Curtis Stollery making their debuts after missing the Surfers clash, Robina were far more organised in defence – a fact that did not go unnoticed by coach Nathan Mulhearn.

PANETTA SEES RED AS KNIGHTS DROP FIRST POINTS

“Obviously to get the win, we’re happy with that and we feel it was a massive improvement from last week, particularly around our defensive attitude,” he said.

“We won’t dwell on last week. I know it’s a different team to who we played last week but defensively we were better.

“Defence is an attitude and we did really well to ensure we closed people down better, we were closer to them. We had a couple of lapses in the second half, which weren’t great, (but) as we get fitter hopefully they disappear.

“We did start with four boys that were different to last week and a couple of lads on the bench were different to last week. Scoring four goals, we’ll take that any day of the week and I thought we probably could’ve had a couple more.”

WHY COMEBACK KID CAN MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT

Having watched his newlook side slump to a 1-0 loss to Palm Beach in their season opener, Broadbeach coach Andrew Robinson said the game was another missed opportunity.

“It’s a game where if you take your chances, it’s a different game. We had 2-3 great chances early doors and we just didn’t taken them,” the first-year Premier League coach said.

“If we take 1-2 of those chances, the scoreboard pressure is there on Robina. (But) the boys are working hard. The first game against Palm Beach we had seven debutants and today we had another three.

THE YOUNG GUN YET TO HIT FULL STRIDE IN TITLE TILT

“The squad is learning, they’re doing well, they’re getting better week in, week out so the final piece of the jigsaw for us is just in that final third and taking the opportunities that we’re creating.”

The Round 2 fixture at Nikiforides Family Park was the only one to go ahead over the weekend as fields were closed due to persistent rain.
