A Western Sydney Wanderers player is at the centre of a police investigation into an alleged rape.

A Western Sydney Wanderers player is at the centre of a police investigation.

New South Wales Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving a top tier Western Sydney Wanderers player.

The alleged incident occurred in Mt Druitt in 2018.

Sources say the alleged rape happened after an A-League game between the Wanderers and Newcastle Jets that was played on November 23 that year at Spotless Stadium in Homebush.

The alleged victim had attended the match, then the two met up after the game after connecting on social media.

The player has not been charged, but is one of two persons of interest in relation to the alleged assault.

NSW Police confirmed an investigation was underway.

“On Thursday 5 May 2022, officers from Mt Druitt Police Area Command commenced an investigation after receiving a report of an alleged sexual assault in Mt Druitt in November, 2018,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“As investigations into the incident are ongoing, no further information is available at this time.”

Football Australia confirmed it is aware of the investigations.

“Upon becoming aware of the allegations via social media in 2021, Football Australia brought the matter to the attention of NSW Police straightaway,” Football Australia said in a statement.

“Football Australia has treated the allegations that it received in 2021 with the utmost seriousness and in continued cooperation with the NSW Police and relevant government organisations.

“We are unable to provide further comment on any Football Australia investigation while the matter remains subject to Police investigation.”

The Wanderers declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
