Socceroos and Melbourne City midfielder Connor Metcalfe has signed a three-year contract with German club St. Pauli.

Metcalfe will complete the current season with City, including the A-League club’s AFC Champions League group stage matches, before linking with St Pauli for the 2022-23 campaign.

St.. Pauli, whose squad includes Metcalfe’s Socceroos teammate Jackson Irvine, currently top Germany’s second division and are set for promotion to the Bundesliga.

City will receive an undisclosed fee for Metcalfe, and it’s understood they will also benefit financially from future transfers involving the Tokyo Olympian

City’s director of football Michael Petrillo said Metcalfe was a “fantastic player” and an “influential person in the dressing room”.

“He has already achieved a lot in his career at City and is still only 22 years old,” Petrillo said.

“We completely understand his desire to test himself in the biggest leagues in Europe and he is moving to an equally ambitious club in St. Pauli.”

Metcalfe said his time at City was “incredible”.

“Being part of the club’s first A-League men’s premiership and championship double-winning squad last season is the proudest moment of my career,” he said.

“Our fans have always been special to me and I’m so thankful for the support they have given me and the team that has created some amazing memories and I hope we can create some more this season.

“We still have work to do this season and I’ll be doing my absolute best to help the team achieve its goals.”
