Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr has taken top honours again, being rated the world’s best women’s footballer by EA Sports ahead of their much anticipated Women’s World Cup update for their FIFA 23 video game.
Gamers will be able to download the update, which includes the ability to take on the World Cup as a manager or their favourite player.
EA Sports have put Kerr as the top rated player with an overall rating of 91.
When broken down the game rates Kerr’s ball skills as 92 out of 100, her heading ability at 91, agility at 90 and finishing skills at 93.
When compared to the men’s rankings, Kerr is on par with superstars Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe.

It puts her ahead of heroes Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr and Mohamed Salah.
It is just another feather in Kerr’s cap who has had a stellar year including her fourth WSL title with Chelsea, getting the call up to be a flag bearer at the King’s Coronation and being named Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year for the second time.
Kerr slots in above some big names with plenty of World Cup experience including USWNT’s Alex Morgan – ranked fourth, Norway’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas.
She isn’t the only Aussie in the top 100 with Ellie Carpenter falling at No. 69, Steph Catley at 71 and Caitlin Foord at 78 – all three were given an overall rating of 83.
So while far from Kerr on the list – they are only eight rating points behind her.
Socceroos goalkeeper Matt Ryan is the highest ranked Australian man by FIFA, well down the list with an overall rating of 77. Aaron Mooy is next best with a rating of 76.
Surprisingly it is Germany who has the most stars ranked in the game’s top 100 women’s players – with captain Alexandra Popp their best ranked at 16.
Euro champions England have 14 in the top 100 with Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp all in the top 20.
Morgan is the only USWNT star in the top 10 with rookie Sophia Smith the next best at 14th.
Included in the update is the inclusion of the first Australian venue, with Stadium Australia, added to the game.
In other World Cup news FIFA have named Optus as the Official Supporter of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Head of consumer marketing at Optus, Cam Luby, said it was the “biggest women’s sporting event ever”.
“For young Australians especially, it’s where inspiration will start and possibilities will be realised. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will inspire the next generation to say yes to their dreams and achieve great things,” he said.
“It’s a privilege to be recognised as both an Official Supporter and Broadcaster of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.”
