Sam Kerr scored a goal but it was her Matildas teammates who hoisted the trophy as Arsenal took down Chelsea in the women’s League Cup final.

Australian stars Caitlin Foord and fellow Matilda Steph Catley got their first taste of success in England and the “freezing” champagne shower was worth it.

Having watched national captain Kerr, who scored for Chelsea again, win so often in England, Foord and Catley delighted in finally seizing some silverware in the 3-1 victory.

“It’s incredible to finally win a trophy with this club – it’s something special,” Foord said.

“That’s what we’re aiming for, winning trophies. It’s worth being freezing in the champagne shower – no complaints, super happy.

“It’s been four years since we won a trophy and it’s well overdue. We wanted to leave everything out there and we wanted to show what we can do and we want to continue to do that.”

Arsenal reversed the result of last weekend’s fifth-round FA Cup tie in which Chelsea sent their London rivals packing.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall said his Australian duo were “excellent” in the win.

“Some players been here for several years and have a lot of memories and been close but not winning, so I am really happy for them,” he said.

More glory could yet come for Arsenal who plays Bayern Munich in a first-leg Champions League quarter-final showdown on March 21.

Kerr and Chelsea will play French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais a day later.
