Matildas midfielder Tameka Yallop returns a positive test to Covid-19

India has already been thrown of the Women’s Asian Cup due to a Covid-19 outbreak, and now the virus has floored a Matildas player.

The Matildas’ Asian Cup campaign has hit a hurdle, with attacking midfielder Tameka Yallop testing positive to Covid-19.

Football Australia confirmed fully vaccinated Yallop’s plight on Thursday morning, saying the 30-year-old West Ham player was “being monitored in isolation” by medical staff.

The remainder of the Matildas’ playing squad and staff have returned negative tests.

The Matildas, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals, are due to play Thailand in their remaining group match in Mumbai on Friday morning (AEDT).

India have already been expelled from the tournament after Covid ripped through its squad putting all teams on high alert.

Yallop’s positive result is a reminder that Covid-19 could derail any team at the Asian Cup.

Earlier this week, Matildas star Emily van Egmond said the Australians were “doing everything possible” to remain healthy.

“Obviously, it’s a pandemic,” van Egmond said.

“It’s turned around the whole entire world, but we have the best protocols in place to keep us safe.”
