Italian giants Inter are among the contenders to meet the A-League All-Stars in June.
Australian Professional Leagues chief executive officer Danny Townsend confirmed on Wednesday that the 19-time Italian champions and three-time European club champions – whose squad includes star Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku and FIFA 2022 World Cup winner Lautaro Martínez – were among “about 10 clubs” in contention to take on the A-League All-Stars.
The A-League All-Stars concept returned last year when Spanish giants Barcelona beat a Dwight Yorke-coached A-League outfit 3-2 in front of more than 70,000 fans at Accor Stadium.
Townsend said a match date and opponent this year for the A-League All-Stars would not be finalised until March at the earliest.
Factors affecting the date and the opponent will include the closing dates of the various European leagues as well as which teams qualify for the finals of the UEFA Champions League (June 10) and the UEFA Europa League (May 31).
The A-League grand final is scheduled for the weekend of June 3-4.
