French midfielder Florin Berenguer’s superb form has earnt him a Melbourne City contract extension.

Berenguer – who has delivered a host of man-of-the-match performances in a 2021-22 campaign that has also included three goals and three assists – will remain with City until at least the end of next season after signing a new deal.

“I’m really enjoying playing with this group,” he said.

“The boys are all committed to working hard for the badge and making the fans proud.

“The City fans have been amazing to me and the team, so I thank them for their support.

“My family and I love this city and it really feels like home.”

In his fourth season with the reigning A-League champions, 32-year-old Berenguer’s 84 appearances in all competitions is the most games by any foreign player in City’s history.

City director of football Michael Petrillo said Berenguer had “worked hard to become a very important player in our squad”.

“It’s great to see him in career-best form this season,” Petrillo said.

“He is one of the most technically gifted players in the league and loves to play our style of football.

“Florin is a premiership and championship-winning player, and his experience and his winning mentality gives us an edge on the pitch.”

Berenguer’s form has been crucial in City’s bid for back-to-back titles.

The Patrick Kisnorbo-coached team is in second spot on the A-League ladder ahead of Wednesday night’s clash against the struggling Perth Glory at AAMI Park.

Skipper Scott Jamieson is pushing for a return to the starting side after coming off the bench in his return from injury in City’s 2-1 weekend win over Sydney FC at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

Key midfielder Aiden O’Neill is also in contention to return from injury after missing the win over Sydney with a facial injury.
