What a cruel way for a historic World Cup campaign to end.

One defensive lapse has come back to haunt the Matildas and cost them a shot at winning a World Cup final on home soil.

Outplayed for much of the first 45 minutes in Sydney, Australia responded brilliantly in the second half and caused England keeper Mary Earps plenty of issues.

But it was ultimately a brain fade in defence which handed the initiative back to England and as Australia pressed for a winner, Alessio Russo punished them at the opposite end.

The dream is over.
