COOMERA Brisbane Women’s Premier League coach Trent Gregson is sick of having to explain himself.

During the community sport shutdown, the respected mentor has taken to giving up his Saturdays to run three private training sessions for local footballers wanting to maintain fitness and keep in touch with teammates.

The sessions are not affiliated with Coomera in any way and are conducted in line with COVID-19 regulations but that hasn’t stopped punters from criticising Gregson and questioning whether they should be permitted to continue.

“It started as my wife and I having a kick when the lockdown was in full force but slowly as restrictions have lifted, we’ve opened it up to other people who’ve wanted to come down and have a kick,” he said.

“I’m doing it for the mental health of my players because around 40 per cent of my squad lost their jobs or their partners lost their jobs and they were stuck in their houses.

“People don’t realise how much of an escape football is for people and for two hours a week, you forget everything that’s happening in life.

“You can give me as much flack as you want but I’m doing what I feel is best for the girls.

“It’s so important to start getting people back into community sport now that we’ve done a lot to flatten the curve.”

The sessions are open to anyone and recent trainings have been opened up to players from Annerley in Brisbane and even Melbourne Victory player Rosie Sutton.

As hope of community sport returning continues to grow, Gregson is confident his players will be fit and ready to repeat their 2019 BWPL finals heroics.

Coomera are the only team in the league who have failed to play a game this year, after copping a bye in Round 1 and having their Round 2 fixture postponed the night before they were supposed to play.

HEALTH CHECK: REVEALING THE FINANCES OF EVERY CLUB

“That was a killer because we were really primed for that game and had an amazing training session that week but then everything got cancelled,” Gregson said.

“It was deflating but at the same time, we have several nurses and police officers in the team so we know full well what the situation is and what we had to overcome.

“The players have all been keeping their personal fitness up and I love the squad I’ve got and I’m really excited to see what they can do.”

It is believed that clubs will be permitted to train again in mid-June, paving the way for the competition to restart in July.

Gregson expects the BWPL season to run in full as originally planned but the Elaine Watson Cup may be axed as a consequence.
