Football Australia has imposed a no-fault suspension on A-League player Angel Torres after he was charged by NSW Police.

Mariners land biggest ever win in AFC Cup

Central Coast Mariners star Angel Torres has been stood down from playing by Football Australia after being charged by NSW Police with sexual assault.

The 24-year-old Colombian was charged with two counts of common assault, intimidation, and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent following an incident on March 24 involving a 21-year-old woman.

Torres, who was scheduled to play for the Mariners in Wednesday night in an AFC Cup match, was arrested at a Terrigal property on Monday.

FA subsequently imposed a no-fault suspension on the player, banning him from participating in football and club related activities.

“It is important to note that Football Australia in imposing this interim suspension is making no finding of guilt or fault in respect of the offences with which Torres has been charged,” the Mariners said in club statement.

“Such charges remain matters to be determined by the Courts of New South Wales.

“The Central Coast Mariners will not be making any further comments in relation to the matter at this time.”

Torres will appear in Gosford Local Court on May 6.

A spokesman from the Australian Professional Leagues, which runs the A-League, said the APL was aware of the charge and would continue to work with all relevant stakeholders.
