DO NOT be surprised to see Bradden Inman with one eye on the opposition captain if he takes to the field for his Socceroos debut against England.
The Adelaide-born playmaker is on the verge of completing a soccer journey that began at Modbury Jets and has taken in the rarefied air of the English Premier League.
But Inman is just as excited by the prospect of facing one player early Saturday morning (Australian time).
“Wayne Rooney,” the Crewe Alexandra player says.
“He’s world class.
“But their team is full of superstars and I can’t wait to play on the same pitch as them.”
Inman’s career will come full circle against the Three Lions after being one of four uncapped players named by Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou for the international friendly.
He moved to England’s northeast with his parents in 2007 to begin a youth contract with Newcastle United.
The 24 year old will pull on an Australian shirt for the first time at the home of the Magpies’ fiercest rival – Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.
“It’s a huge achievement for me and a proud moment,” Inman says from the Socceroos’ team camp in Newcastle, the city his parents still call home.
“I just hope I can get on the pitch.
“All my family and friends will be there and they’re so proud of me.
“But I have to thank them for what they have done for me leaving Australia for England.”
An Australian cap seemed a world away for Inman as recently as 2013.
After progressing to Newcastle’s reserve side, he rejected a contract offer to seek first team opportunities at English third-tier club Crewe.
But he was left unable to train or play for four months as the clubs thrashed out a compensation fee.
Frustrated by a lack of recognition from the country of his birth, he also played for Scotland at youth level thanks to his Scottish-born mother, before deciding where his allegiances lie.
“It’s been a long journey,” says Inman, who can play as a No.10, striker or left winger.
“But I never gave up because I believed if my club form was going well I’d maybe get a call up and I’m thankful it happened.”
Inman has enjoyed his most prolific season, scoring 10 goals and grabbing four assists in 42 games for Crewe.
His breakout campaign included a hot streak of six goals in six games in January-February which alerted national team scouts to his talents.
But it was not enough to save the Railwaymen from relegation to League Two.
Inman refuses to speculate on interest from other clubs, despite being linked with Championship side Nottingham Forest and Scottish Premier League club Ross County.
“It (relegation) was a sad moment for the club.
“I’ve been offered a new deal (by Crewe), but after this international break I’m going to sit down with my agent and family and discuss what’s best for me moving forward.”
The Socceroos camp will be a reunion of sorts for Inman who will link up with former Gleeson College school mate and ex-Adelaide United winger Craig Goodwin, now of Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam.
He hopes to do enough to nail down a spot in the Socceroos squad ahead of this year’s Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
“A lot of them (Socceroos players) have had good careers so I respect all of them and hope to learn each day,” says Inman, who has scored 24 goals in four seasons at Crewe.
“I just want to impress the boss.
“It’s exciting times ahead.”
