MARQUEE player Marcin Budzinski has declared Melbourne City can beat Sydney FC next time they meet.

The Polish attacker showed glimpses of his huge potential in his longest outing yet and while he couldn’t replicate his stunning derby goal, he hoped he had done enough to break into City’s first XI.

Budzinski replaced Tim Cahill midway through the first half after the Socceroo rolled his ankle, but was helpless as the visitors won 1-0 via a Luke Wilkshire volley.

“Yes (they are the A-League champions), but we can beat them,’’ Budzinski said. “We just need to change a few things and I am sure that next game we have to win.

“It is (disappointing). It was a hard game, we knew it would be hard, unfortunately we lost. We know Sydney is a strong team, now we have to keep going and focus on the next game.’’

Budzinski, 27, has made three substitute appearances, two after coming on for injured players in the first half, including the derby when he scored within two minutes of replacing Osama Malik.

He hopes to have convinced coach Warren Joyce enough to break into City’s first XI for Sunday’s home clash with Western Sydney, as he fights for a maiden start.

“This is football, I’m just waiting for my chance. I knew before the game I wouldn’t play,’’ Budzinski said.

“We will see. The coach is the boss, he will decide. I can just do my job, trying to show my best at training and wait for my chance.

“But I’m always ready to play, the coach has spoken with me many times so I’m just doing my job at training and waiting for my chance.

“Now I feel more confident because I’m here two months. It was my third game, but second game with more time. What can I say? I’ll try my best with every game I hope to play better and like today I want to show my best.’’
