ADELAIDE United’s FFA Cup win three years ago has set an ugly pattern for the victors.

Whoever wins the clash between Sydney FC and Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday hope to reshape the Cup’s very fresh history.

Each club that has claimed the coveted trophy has bombed with no other silverware for the rest of the season.

When Adelaide won the trophy in a 1-0 win over Perth Glory at Hindmarsh courtesy of a Sergio Cirio goal the side was sitting second on the A-League ladder, just two points behind leaders Melbourne Victory while Glory was seventh.

At the end of the season Adelaide finished in third spot, seven points behind Premier’s Plate winner Victory and failed at the second week of the finals with a 4-1 loss to Sydney FC.

A year later Victory hoisted the Cup with a 2-0 win over Glory in Melbourne.

Victory was fifth at the time, four points behind league leader Sydney FC.

At the end of the season Adelaide jagged the double — the Premier’s Plate and grand final at Adelaide Oval in 2016.

Victory was turfed out of the finals series at the first hurdle losing 2-1 to Brisbane Roar.

Last year it was Tim Cahill grabbing all the FFA Cup headlines for Melbourne City.

His classy headed goal earned the club’s first piece of silverware in a 1-0 win over Tuesday’s finalist Sydney FC.

And just like the two Cup finals beforehand City didn’t buck the A-League trend.

The club was sitting second, four points behind Sydney before the Cup win.

At season’s end City crashed to fourth place.

It lost its first finals match 2-0 to Glory before Sydney hoisted the Premier’s Plate and claimed the grand final.
