SuperCoach BBL: Hobart Hurricanes trade options for round 8 double rated

The last two rounds of SuperCoach BBL for the summer are almost here and it’s time to load up on Hobart Hurricanes. We rate the best options to bring in ahead of round 8.

Hurricanes go top with win over Thunder

Like a runaway freight train, the Cane train is gathering unstoppable speed in BBL14.

The Hurricanes have become one of the title favourites and just as they reach top gear, they become the focus for SuperCoaches.

Hobart plays twice in round 8, which is the last double of BBL14.

This might be your last chance to score big and jump the rankings by loading up on the right Hobart players.

We’ve left Ben McDermott out with the expectation he misses with a hamstring issue.

But if he plays, consider him in your trade plans for round 8.

Melbourne Stars have the bye, so moving them on to Hurricanes will be a popular move this round.

Here’s how we rate the main Hurricanes for the round 8 double.

Matthew Wade has a great role for SuperCoach scoring.

MATTHEW WADE WKP-BAT

He might be retired from the Australian set-up, but Wade is still one of the premier domestic T20 players. He’s got a great SuperCoach role, taking the gloves and opening the batting for Hobart. Wade has registered five dismissals in his past three games and his SuperCoach average would be much higher had he not been dismissed just short of strike rate eligibility twice.

NATHAN ELLIS BWL

The Hobart skipper is one of the BBL’s premier death bowlers, but has struggled to get among the wickets so far in BBL14. Ellis has two scalps in four matches, so many SuperCoaches might look elsewhere at more in-form options such as Riley Meredith. But what’s great about Ellis is he’s regularly the 20th-over bowler, giving him a great chance to score big. If you want a bowler with a standout role, he’s your man.

RILEY MEREDITH BWL

The Hurricanes speedster is enjoying one of his best BBL campaigns, conceding less than eight runs an over and averaging a wicket evert 16.5 balls. Meredith averages more than 50 points a game against Hobart’s last three opponents in BBL14 — the Renegades, Heat and Stars.

Tim David is one of the BBL’s form players.

TIM DAVID BAT

The Hurricanes missed a trick by having David face only 83 balls last season. This season alone he has already faced 90, including 56 in Hobart’s last two matches (when he has scored 97 and 103 SuperCoach points from successive fifties). His role isn’t traditionally one SuperCoaches would target — batting at No.6. But with his incredible power and ability to take advantage of the surge, David can rack up points fast.

NIKHIL CHAUDHARY BAT-BWL

Batting at No. 5 and bowling in the past four matches, Chaudhary is one of the best all-round options to target from the Hurricanes. His bowling role is far from guaranteed and it’s unlikely he would have been used in the last game had Nathan Ellis not been hurt. Still, Chaudhary is the type of player who can get on a roll. He has scored at least 20 in four straight games and taken a wicket in three of those.

MITCH OWEN BAT-BWL

The big-hitting opener has been a revelation in BBL14, scoring more runs than any other Hurricane at a strike rate of almost 180. Owen announced himself when he scored 101 not out against Perth Scorchers and has made about $90k after starting the season with a SuperCoach price tag of $58k. If he goes off, he could be what separates you from the pack in round 8 when most teams will be loaded with Hurricanes.

Chris Jordan is the linchpin of the Hurricanes side.

CHRIS JORDAN BWL

Close to the must-have this week from Hobart. Jordan bats at No. 7, bowls the key overs and is one of the BBL’s best fielders. He scoring this season hasn’t been spectacular, but Jordan showcased his ceiling in round 4 when he posted 114 points against the Sixers.

Billy Stanlake celebrates a wicket with Nathan Ellis.

THE POINT-OF-DIFFERENCE OPTIONS

BILLY STANLAKE BWL

Big Billy is finally getting his groove back after several years of injury issues. He’s by no means a huge SuperCoach scorer, posting between 21-43 in all bar one game this year. But he’ll be a unique option who should bowl four overs in both games and is averaging a wicket per match this BBL.

PETER HATZOGLOU BWL

The man who became a BBL cult hero a few years ago at the Renegades has come back into the Hobart team in recent games. Hatzoglou has an important role as the first-choice spinner after Waqar Salamkheil departed for the ILT20. His scoring is unlikely to be big, but like Satnlake he’ll be a big POD.
