A veteran Gold Coast cricketer and his club president have been banned for 20 matches after a district investigation into a brawl on the sidelines of a local ground that was captured on video.
Former Gold Coast representative star Wade Kilborn and Southport Labrador Cricket Club president Don Gumm were handed equal bans by the Cricket Gold Coast judiciary after an argument at a grand final afterparty three weeks ago turned violent at Surfers Paradise Cricket Club.
Surfers Paradise were not involved in any way.
The argument turned physical when Kilborn threw a glass at Gumm, who had played in the Over-40s Division II grand final that Kilborn was spectating earlier that afternoon.
Cricket Gold Coast met last Wednesday to review evidence and last night informed Southport Labrador that both men had been suspended for 20 matches.
Cricket Gold Coast president Dean Johnson said in a statement the district did not condone violence.
“Cricket Gold Coast does not condone any form of violence on the field or off it,” he said.
“Players, spectators and club officials are to be mindful of this when they take the field or attend games.”
Kilborn is a veteran of 231 Kookaburra Cup first grade matches for Southport over 15 years but reportedly dropped himself to second grade at Christmas in protest of the club’s handling of an incident with first grade captain Nic Peterson, who left the club for Paradise.
A 20-game suspension will ensure neither Kilborn or Gumm takes the field in the 2020-21 season, which runs for 16 regular season games and two finals from October to March.
No complaint was made to police over the incident and the matter is now resolved. No charges were laid. Officials at Southport Labrador could not be reached for comment.
EARLIER
A prominent Gold Coast cricket player is in hot water after allegedly glassing a senior club official during an Over-40s grand final afterparty last Sunday.
Video footage obtained by the Bulletin shows an ugly brawl between the two middle-aged men in front of horrified onlookers including children.
The brawl was sparked when the official, who was involved in the match earlier that afternoon, demanded the man, a spectator, leave the premises at Surfers Paradise Cricket Club.
There is no suggestion the men are members of that club.
He replied: “Shut the f*** up if you’re going to talk to me like that, C***. F*** you,” and threw his glass at the official’s face from close range.
A flurry of 13 punches were exchanged before four men were able to separate them.
The player, with blood streaming from a cut to his cheek, announced: “He started that. I didn’t do a f****** thing.”
Onlookers watching from the balcony disagreed.
“Yes you did, you threw a f****** glass,” a woman said.
WARNING: CONFRONTING FOOTAGE
“He came over and asked you to leave, politely.
“That guy with the cap [the player] started the whole thing. The guy with the bloody face, he threw a glass at his own teammate [sic].”
The player was escorted from the sideline by six men.
Police confirmed no complaint had been made and no charges laid by Sunday afternoon.
Neither the club official involved in the fight nor Cricket Gold Coast president Dean Johnson have responded to the Bulletin’s request for comment.
