Ricky Ponting rumoured to snag new coaching role in the US

There are rumours Ricky Ponting is in demand to take on a new cricketing role in the US as the sport attempts to crack the toughest market in the world once again.

Ricky Ponting is currently a leading candidate for the coaching position at the Washington Freedom in the US based Major League Cricket competition.

Sources have disclosed that Ponting, at the age of 49, has been in talks with the American team to become their coach for the upcoming 2024 season.

If successful, he will succeed his former coach from Tasmania, Greg Shipperd.

The MLC which is about to start its second season, had an impressive debut last year, as the ICC push to make cricket a mainstream attraction in the US.

Renowned Australian players like Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Aaron Finch, and Adam Zampa participated in the league’s inaugural season. With the Twenty20 World Cup concluding shortly before, it’s expected that even more prominent Australian cricketers will join the league this year.

Washington Freedom, which made it to the eliminator final in the first MLC season, is associated with Cricket NSW.

Shipperd, who led the team in its first season, has deep ties with Cricket NSW, having managed the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League since 2015 and recently taking over as the coach of the state men’s team.

Following his playing career, Ponting has built a name for himself as one of the most highly coaches in short-form cricket.

He currently coaches the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and serves as the head of strategy for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL, a team that has not reached the finals in the two seasons under his leadership.

Of the six teams in the MLC, three share names with IPL franchises, indicating a strategy to broaden their global presence.

While Indian investments have been pivotal for the MLC, Australian states are also actively involved.

Beyond the Freedom’s partnership with CNSW, Cricket Victoria has linked up with the San Francisco Unicorns, and recently, Queensland Cricket announced its collaboration with the Seattle Orcas.

Following his playing career, Ponting has built a name for himself as one of the most highly coaches in short-form cricket.
