The future of Queensland cricket can be glimpsed through the naming of the City and Queensland Country under 19 teams.
Valley batting prodigy Hugh Weibgen, the youngest player in his club’s history to score a first grade century (17 years, 80 days), leads the charge in the Metro side which will join Queensland Country at the under 19 national championships.
Weibgen will play alongside two other members of the Brisbane Grammar School 2022 GPS First XI premiership winning side - all-rounder Angus Tolhurst (Western Suburbs) and fast bowler Callum Vidler (Valley).
Metro boasts two express new ball bowlers in Vidler and Toombul’s Tom Balkin, a Nudgee College old boys.

Balkin was involved earlier this month in practice matches against Afghanistan as part of their build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Several of the Metro team are regulars in the Sci-Fleet Motors First Grade competition, including Wynnum-Manly wicketkeeper Reuben Burger, Gold Coast keeper/batter Lachlan Aitken and Balkin.
Gold Coast pace bowler Cody Reynolds is the grandson of former Queensland opener Ray Reynolds.
Queensland Country will have their own fast bowling enforcer in big hearted, tall Toowoomba Grammar School old boy Jem Ryan who shook up the GPS competition earlier this year with his bounce.
Aside from Ryan who made the Australian Under-19 merit squad last summer, the Country team, alongside Darling Downs teammates Harrison Tzannes and Arshvir Singh and Far North Queensland’s Matthew Wilkins.
The Queensland Country side includes Mackay twins Hayden and Jackson Evetts, whose father Kim was a former Queensland Colts, Queensland 2nd XI and Queensland Country player.
The naming of the side comes at a time when recent Australian under 19 graduates like Matt Willams and Connor Sully (both 2020), Jack Sinfield, Toby Snell and IGS’s old boy Tom Whitney (all 2021) and 2021 World Cup shadow player Aubrey Stockdale - a Terrace old boy teammate of Snell - work their way through the system.
