Mitch Marsh is blitzing the Big Bash but can’t see a way into Test team

Mitch Marsh doesn’t see a Test return in his immediate future despite growing support for a return to the baggy green after a stunning run of T20 batting form.

The Perth Scorchers star lifted his team to a fifth straight BBL win on Wednesday night pounding 86 off just 53 balls off the back of an unbeaten century in his opening match of the tournament in Hobart last week.

The rich vein of form comes after a man-of-the-match performance in the T20 World Cup final where he smashed an unbeaten 77 to lead Australia to glory.

It’s the sort of form which prompted several pundits, including Test great Shane Warne to declare selectors should seize on Marsh’s golden run and return him to the Test team.

But the 30-year-old, who played the last of his 32 Tests during the 2019 Ashes in England, doesn’t see the need to get out his baggy green any time soon with the Aussies 2-0 up in the current series and not looking for another all-rounder.

“As a cricketer you are always striving to play all formats for Australia,” Marsh said.

“But there’s certainly no way in that team at the moment, they’re playing extremely good cricket,” he said.

“For me it’s about playing for the Scorchers and loving it.”

Beaten Melbourne Renegades captain Nic Maddinson said it was near impossible to stop Marsh the way he was batting.

“It’s pretty impressive to come out and play the way he does, and to get off to a start so quick, he puts everyone on the back foot straight away,” Maddinson said post-match.

“He just put the foot down and just kept going after the spin as well so it made it quite difficult.

“When Mitch is out there and playing the way he is, it’s pretty hard to stop … it felt like nothing worked at some stages.”

Marsh was asked if he was in the best form of his life after the win on Wednesday, and didn’t want to answer the question directly.

Instead he said he was just enjoying the responsibility of leading the Scorchers, who have been locked out of their home state of WA and will play out the BBL on the road.

“We’ve just come together, we understand what’s ahead of us, it’s going to be a challenge,” he said.

“I’m just enjoying my cricket

“I love playing for the Scorchers, I’m enjoying the consistency of everything I’m doing and that’s relaying out onto the field.

“I know my role, I’m really clear with that, and I back my own ability to keep the scoreboard rolling.”
