Horror run-out for India highlights the biggest moments on day 2 in Melbourne

Virat Kolhi and Yashasvi Jaiswal were cruising at the MCG, before a dreadful moment occurred to change both the Test match and the series, as day 2 offered up plenty of highlights.

The moment that changed the Boxing Day Test | Day 2

The 4th Test of the Border-Gavaskar series is delicately poised, with an Indian fightback snuffed out late on day 2, thanks to a horrific mix-up and some Scott Boland magic.

Daniel Cherny and Robert Craddock pick out the day’s biggest and best moments.

THE DISASTER

Talk about a rush of blood.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dreadful run-out might well be remembered as the dismissal that determined the course of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as calmness morphed into chaos.

It was all the youngster’s fault. Jaiswal clipped a ball to Pat Cummins at mid-on and called for the run which Virat Kohli had every right to reject because it wasn’t on.

But Jaiswal kept coming and the two ended up at the bowler’s end with Pat Cummins shy at the stumps being taken at the other end by Alex Carey who whipped the bails off to Jaiswal’s superb innings in sorrowful fashion.

CUMMINS’ LATEST PIECE OF MAGIC

Add it to the pile. Yet another wonderball from Pat Cummins, and this time it removed India’s in-form KL Rahul with the final delivery before tea. This one pitched on middle and off, seaming back to take the top of off-stump after Rahul didn’t get forward enough to it. Cummins has made an artform of such deliveries.

SPACE INVADER

A day after Virat Kohli was under fire for invading the personal space of Sam Konstas, Kohli had his own space invaded in the most unusual way.

A pitch invader dressed in a blue shirt and carrying the Ukranian flag jogged onto the ground from fine leg and ran past Indian keeper Rishabh Pant and captain Rohan Sharma before wrapping his arms around Kohli who seemed unfazed and returned the hug before security arrived to escort him off.

SMUDGE DOES IT AGAIN

Unlike 11 days earlier at the Gabba there was no massive drought to break this time, but this seemed no less special for Steve Smith who brought up his 34th Test century with a nudge for four through the off-side off Nitish Kumar Reddy. Upon reaching the milestone he removed his helmet and nodded to himself repeatedly as if to say: “yeah, I can definitely still do this.” Rumours of the champion’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

SHARMA UNDER FIRE

Down the order and back up again, the next move from here could be out of the side for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Returning to the top of the order as part of a rejig that squeezed out Shubman Gill, Rohit limply tried to pull Pat Cummins but suceeeded only in gifting a catch to Scott Boland at mid-on, departing for three.
