Blast From The Past with Gold Coast cricketer Andrew Robinson

He was already a Queensland Sheffield Shield batsman and a giant in Gold Coast cricket but Andrew Robinson outdid himself with one mighty innings six years ago for the Dolphins. Here is this week’s Blast From The Past.

BUY this man a beer.

Better yet, Dolphins coach Damian Wallis might owe Andrew Robinson a carton.

The hard hitting batsman is just one run short of a 22-year-old club batting record after an amazing performance during day one of a two-day match against Wynnum Manly in Brisbane.

But both Robinson and Wallis said they will declare the innings at the start of day two – waving away any shot of beating the record held by Steve Storey.

“It doesn’t really matter to me,” Robinson said.

“I don’t want to waste the time with changeover.

“I think we need all the time we can get to try and win the game.”

Robinson is sitting on 203 runs off 234 balls, including 18 boundaries and eight sixes, to help give his side a handy score of 9 for 388 going into this Saturday’s match in Brisbane.

The total eclipses his previous best of 192 runs for the Dolphins in 2006-07 however was still shy of his career best; a staggering 239 not out for Welsh side Abergavenny in 2008.

Robinson, a self-proclaimed Hawthorn Hawks “diehard fan”, was surprised at the high total, admitting he was more concentred with the AFL side’s grand final score than his own.

“Everyone was getting excited that I was nearing 200 but I wanted to know how the Hawks were going,” he said.

“When I came in at the end of the day the first thing I asked was what the score was.

“It ended up being a good day with my batting and the Hawks winning.”

Player-coach Damian Wallis said Robinson’s double century effort was a special moment to witness and believes the veteran deserves a look into the Queensland Bulls side.

“It was one of those special innings that you are happy to be a part of,” Wallis said.

“I don’t think there is any need to play on (this Saturday). I think he (Robinson) will be fine with that.

“(Robinson) seems pretty relaxed at the moment and is enjoying his cricket. It wouldn’t surprise me if a few selectors sat up and took notice.”

Wallis said Robinson will be given the captaincy going into this Saturday’s match, with regular captain Michael Neser tipped to receive selection into the Queensland side.

While their total of 388 is a good start, Wallis said the Dolphins will need to avoid complacency if they want to win against a strong Wynnum Manly batting line-up.

“Without Neser it is going to be a group effort,” Wallis said.

“We need to back ourselves to win but they have a lot of quality batsmen.”
