Who to trade in and out of your SuperCoach BBL team after Round 1

As Round 1 of SuperCoach BBL draws to a close the trade window is about to open for a limited time before Round 2 lockout. And one of the most popular players in the game has to go.

It’s time to strike.

Approaching Round 2 of this summer’s Big Bash League, we have a clearer indication of each team’s line-up and can base our trades and future planning accordingly.

The Adelaide Strikers, which opened BBL08 with an impressive win over Brisbane Heat, are the key side to focus on when planning your SuperCoach BBL trades for Round 2.

CHAMP: SHANE WARNE’S FINAL TEAM

The Strikers have a double against Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers, therefore representing your best chance to maximise points.

Many coaches loaded up on Brisbane Heat players to take advantage of their Round 1 double, but we don’t see the likes of Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum and Joe Burns again until Round 4 as the Heat has the bye in Rounds 2 and 3.

Your best trade play will be moving these players on to bring Strikers in, although cheaper picks such as Max Bryant and James Pattinson still have money to make and present a perfect foil for the vice-captain loophole.

You’d be wise to hold them for this reason.

The likes of classy opener Jake Weatherald, who is guaranteed to bat twice, Aussie one-day and Twenty20 keeper Alex Carey and star leg-spinner Rashid Khan loom as must-haves.

The most popular trade will undoubtedly be Lynn to Carey. They started the season separated by only $2400 and Carey cannot be overlooked after his brilliant 70 from 46 balls against the Heat.

It is crucial to have your structure for Rounds 3 and 4 in mind when trading for Round 2.

If you snuck one or two Strikers into your Round 1 team, you might be able to use a trade to jump early on a Hobart or Sydney Sixers player. Both of those teams share a double in Round 3.

Note: Round 1 lockout ends after the Heat vs Hurricanes game on Saturday night and Round 2 lockout begins when the Strikers play the Renegades on Sunday night.

TOP TRADE TARGETS

1. Alex Carey

Australia’s next Test keeper went at a strike rate of 152 in his knock of 70 against Brisbane, accumulating a game-high 132 points. There’s no reason to suggest he can’t back that up, plus he has two chances to pick up points from keeping dismissals.

2. Rashid Khan

The Afghanistan leggie who took BBL07 by storm was a popular starting selection and delivered with 129 points courtesy of his haul of 3-19 from four overs. If you don’t have him in Round 2 you’ll be left behind.

3. Ben Laughlin

The Big Bash League’s all-time leading wicket-taker started with 1-28 from four overs for 44 points. He’s too valuable not to have when he’s almost certain to bowl eight overs in a round.

POD MOVES

1. Matt Short

The Victorian made a flying start to his career with the Strikers, notching 2-14 from three overs and making 13. He was awkwardly priced at the start of the BBL but if he’s batting in the top four and bowling he needs to be considered. His scalps included Max Bryant.

2. Joe Denly

If you’re in the fortunate position of already having enough Strikers for Round 2 (ideally you’d like minimum five), then start planning for Round 3 by bringing in a player such as Sydney Sixers top-order batsman Joe Denly. He’s as experienced as they come in T20 cricket, a crafty leg-spinner and aggressive top-three batsman. Just be mindful he’s in England’s Test squad to play the West Indies and will depart in Round 7.

3. Colin Ingram

Only one point for the South African in the opening game of the BBL after he was dismissed cheaply. It would be easy to overlook him due to this, but he’s a top-three batsman and captain of a side playing twice.

SUGGESTED TRADES

1. Lynn to Carey or Khan

2. McCullum to Weatherald

3. Ur Rahman to Laughlin

Joe Denly of the Sixers could be a smart left-field move.
