As the start of the BBL season draws closer, the likely round 1 line-ups for most teams is becoming clearer.

With that in mind, Code Sports’ Lachie McKirdy has locked in his team for BBL13.

It’s a mix of proven quality and potential with the all-important round 1 super round in mind.

Wicketkeepers

Josh Philippe (Sydney Sixers) $102,700 WKP/BAT

Ben McDermott (Hobart Hurricanes) $88,000 WKP/BAT

Ideally, these are the sort of selections you can set-and-forget for the entire season (or swap them with batters if you need to). Philippe and McDermott have both previously been named player of the tournament and have the pedigree to score plenty of runs in the competition. If they can play anywhere near their best, their starting price makes them a must-have in the early rounds.

Batters

Quinton de Kock (Melbourne Renegades) $180,000 BAT/WKP

Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers) $180,000 BAT/BWL

Colin Munro (Brisbane Heat) $156,100 BAT

Sam Billings (Brisbane Heat) $116,900 BAT/WKP

Jack Edwards (Sydney Sixers) $62,500 BAT

Jake Fraser-McGurk (Melbourne Renegades) $62,500 BAT

D’Arcy Short (Adelaide Strikers) $67,500 BAT

I’ve gone for a mix of class and potential for the batters. The likes of de Kock, Curran and Munro are all proven performers and should be guaranteed a certain benchmark of points as platinum players. The real test will be how long they are all available. For Billings, he’s an extra boost in round one as both a wicketkeeper with Peirson unavailable and a key part of the Heat’s batting line-up.

The focus then turns to some guys who could light up the comp. Edwards is playing the best cricket of his career and looks to have turned a corner at NSW, while we all know what Fraser-McGurk is capable of. If Short becomes an all-round option for the Strikers, his points could be handy for such a low base value.

Bowlers

Sean Abbott (Sydney Sixers) $197,600 BWL

Jason Behrendorff (Perth Scorchers) $177,600 BWL

Will Sutherland (Melbourne Renegades) $158,400 BAT/BWL

Spencer Johnson (Brisbane Heat) $125,500 BWL

Mitchell Swepson (Brisbane Heat) $71,300 BWL

Daniel Sams (Sydney Thunder) $162,500 BAT/BWL

Tanveer Sangha (Sydney Thunder) $83,800

Abbott and Behrendorff are two of the most consistent bowlers in the Big Bash and should produce plenty of wickets across the season. In Sutherland and Sams, you also have two players who can impact the game with bat and ball. Brisbane’s three-game opening round has led to me taking a risk with both Spencer Johnson and Mitch Swepson, but both could be sugar hits who quickly come out of the team.

Tanveer Sangha is irresistible as well at such a low price point after finally working his way back from injury.
