SuperCoach BBL: Hobart Hurricanes Study Guide

Here comes the study guide of the Hobart Hurricanes – are they to blame (thank?) for the changes to the way the finals format works in the Bash Bash League?

Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short of the Hurricanes brought plenty of fireworks to their opening partnership for the Hurricanes last season

Last season, the opening duo of D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade regularly set the ‘Canes up at the top of the order and allowed them to get off to rollicking starts, with Short scoring a mammoth 637 runs, hitting six half-centuries with a high score of 96 not out, and helping his side finish as the minor premiers.

It was only in the Semi-Final against the Melbourne Stars that the Hurricanes came undone, and contributed to another quirk of fate, with the minor premier of the BBL|08 season continuing the minor premier curse, failing to make the final despite being clearly the best-performed side in the competition during the regular season.

Perhaps they were the straw that broke the camel’s back, and the reason why there was a change to the tournament structure for BBL|09, with the minor premier effectively now getting a double-chance, and an opportunity to redeem themselves?

Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see how the Hurricanes back up their excellent season last year, particularly with the likes of Matthew Wade and Jofra Archer likely to be otherwise occupied with international duties for Australia and England respectively throughout the summer.

With several of their players as the most-owned players in the SuperCoach BBL game last season, there’s still plenty of value to be had in their squad.

THE STAR: D’ARCY SHORT | BAT / BWL | 91.3 avg. in BBL|08 | $262,800 in BBL|09

You simply can’t look past D’Arcy Short. He’s the top player in the game over Melbourne Stars’ Marcus Stoinis because, quite simply, he is more likely to play the full season. With Short unlikely to get a call up to tour India in the middle of the BBL|09 season, he’s a sure-fire winner for the majority of SuperCoach BBL sides, with his Dual Position Player flexibility making him a monty to pick in either the BAT or BWL position. With the Hurricanes having no ‘bye’ round in SuperCoach BBL, he is worth every cent of his high dollar value.

THE BURN MAN: JOFRA ARCHER | BWL | 51.6 avg. | $148,500

No longer eligible for DPP flexibility, the likelihood is that Archer will no longer be available for the Hurricanes for virtually the entire BBL|09 season. The native Barbadian burst onto the scene for his adopted English side in the ODI World Cup and will likely be an important member of their squad across all three cricketing formats. It means that anyone who has him in their SuperCoach BBL squad for the start of this season is likely to be carrying a very expensive doughnut – don’t burn your salary cap on Archer!

SuperCoach BBL: Shane Warne's Best Spinners

THE YOUNG GUN: QAIS AHMAD | BWL | 82.0 avg. | $148,600

Ahmad proved a worthy replacement when he joined the Hurricanes as an injury replacement for Englishman Tymal Mills last season, quickly capturing eight wickets in three appearances with the Hurricanes. The 19 year old spin sensation knows how to enjoy his time in the middle – when he celebrated a wicket in the Caribbean Premier League in 2018 by doing a running backflip he became something of an instant internet meme. Set to play the entire tournament in BBL|09, Ahmad looms as a young gun to keep an eye on.

THE POINT OF DIFFERENCE: JAMES FAULKNER | BAT / BWL | 54.0 avg. | $155,400

More of a bowling all-rounder than a batting one, Faulkner brought a wealth of experience to a young Hurricanes outfit in last season’s tournament, capturing 18 wickets in 13 appearances. Thanks to the success of skipper Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short at the top of the order, he only got to the crease with the bat in hand on six occasions, but if he gets more opportunity in BBL|09 then his average could be even better than that which already placed him inside the top 25 averaging players in the competition last season.

THE BREAKOUT CONTENDER: BEN McDERMOTT | WKP / BAT | 41.1 avg. | $118,300

With Matthew Wade seemingly a lock for the Australian Test side for at least the first part of the BBL|09 season, it will open a huge opportunity for Ben McDermott to partner D’Arcy Short at the top of the Hurricanes batting order. With one century and two half hundreds to his name from his appearances at the top of the crease, he’s also been donning the gloves for Tasmania, so it would make sense that he will do the same for the Hurricanes if Wade and Tim Paine are both otherwise occupied with national duties.

THE MID-PRICER: RILEY MEREDITH | BWL | 48.3 avg. | $139,000

Already being talked up by none other than Shane Warne as one of the best young quicks in the nation (and a part of Warne’s SuperCoach squad as well), Meredith is – by dint of his very solid performances in BBL|08, when he captured 16 wickets from 13 matches – decidedly mid-priced. There’s every chance that he’ll be the prime strike bowler for the Hurricanes in the upcoming Big Bash season … there’s also an outside chance that he could earn higher honours, and be selected for the tour to India in January.
