Veteran T20 expert Dan Christian says his eyes “haven’t gone yet” after he cemented his place as a Big Bash weapon with the second-fastest 50 in tournament history on Sunday night.

Christian, 37, is one of the most successful T20 players in the game’s limited history, winning eight titles with teams around the world.

He joined the defending champion Sydney Sixers this season with a view to helping the men in magenta go back-to-back and lifted them to 2-1 with his match-defining slog-a-thon in Hobart.

Christian took advantage of an X-factor substitution which the Strikers got horribly wrong, swatting subbed-in Liam Scott for three sixes and a four in the spinner’s second over his way to a 15-ball 50.

He was out almost immediately after raising his bat, but the damage was done and Christian, who is playing for his fourth BBL franchise, said he couldn’t be going much better.

“I just feel like I’m in a good place,” he said.

“I had a really good season in England, I did all right in the practice games

“I think as long as your eyes don’t go, and mine haven’t gone yet, having that extra years’ experience, you’ve been in those situations before and you tend to see what‘s coming and read the game a little bit better.

“Knowing it was the power surge, I was trying to hit everything for six.”

Christian was man of the match in the semi-final and the final of the T20 blast in England earlier this year, a signal that he remains a force in the shortest form of the game.

The all-rounder also took his fourth wicket for the tournament against the Strikers, having opened up with 3/36 in his Sixers debut.

“It tends to happen when you are an all-rounder. When things are going your way in one discipline, it tends to feed in to the other one,” he said.

Gillespie said he knew Christian was coming in to “tee off”.

And he had to concede the decision to make the sub, when his bowlers had Sydney pinned down at 2-52 from 10 overs didn’t go his way, changed the game for his team which slipped to a 1-2 record.

“The way the surface was playing, to use Scotty in that role, to be able to strengthen the batting, that’s the option we decided to go with,” Gillespie said.

“That changed the whole momentum of the game.”
