Brisbane Heat’s hopes of turning around their poor start to the BBL season have suffered a major blow, with captain Chris Lynn ruled out for at least three weeks with a hamstring injury.

A late withdrawal from the Heat side that lost by just two runs to the Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday night at the Gabba, Lynn has been diagnosed with a low grade hamstring strain.

The big-hitting batsman will miss at least another five Heat matches, including Sunday night’s clash against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Gabba.

Heat officials are hopeful Lynn will be fit for Brisbane’s match against the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium on January 14.

Lynn’s absence will hurt the Heat, who have started the season with a hat-trick of losses.

“He’s one of the most destructive batsmen in world cricket so he’s going to be a miss to any team he’s in,” Heat import Joe Denly said.

Englishman Denly will spend Christmas in hotel quarantine in Perth and is due to arrive in Queensland next week.

Denly’s countryman and fellow Heat recruit Lewis Gregory finishes his quarantine spell on Friday but the all-rounder is only a slim chance at best to play on Sunday night.

“It’s been a tough start for the Brisbane boys,” Denly said.

“Hopefully we (Denly and Gregory) can add a bit of firepower to the batting and bowling as well, lift the spirits and try to be a real positive influence around the group.

“It’s not always how you start these long competitions. It’d be nice to get a few wins under the belt to start with, but it is a long competition and there’s a lot of cricket to be played, so hopefully we can get on a real good run at the right time, finish strong and still have a sniff of qualifying (for the finals).”

South African paceman Morne Morkel’s Heat debut is set to be delayed until next month.
