Australia defeat India 3-1 to capture Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Australia have wrapped up a historic series victory against India to capture a trophy that has eluded them for over a decade.

For the first time since the 2014-15 series, Australia have reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after securing victory at the SCG on Day 3.

It was yet another chaotic day at the crease with eight wickets falling in four hours of play as the Aussies wrapped things up.

Pat Cummins and his men entered the day’s play needing to take four wickets and keep the Indian total as low as possible.

They did just that as they restricted the tourists to only 16 runs and left themselves needing 162 runs for victory.

In a bitter blow for India, fast bowling destroyer and player of the series Jasprit Bumrah didn’t take the field as his back injury took its toll.

The innings got off to a lightning start with the Aussies registering 35 runs from the first three overs before the wickets began to fall.

Sam Konstas and Marnus Labuschagne threw their wickets away with baffling shots before Steve Smith fell on 9,999 career runs with an edge to slips.

Virat Kohli then elected to fire up the crowd with a bizarre sandpaper gesture, the act raised eyebrows but it didn’t do anything to stop the Aussies.

Travis Head combined with debutant Beau Webster with a 58-run stand to guide the Aussies to victory and claim the 3-1 series win.

The win sees them hold the Border-Gavaskar trophy for the first time since India reclaimed it during the 2016-17 series.
