Aussies determined for Ashes clean sweep

Australian women’s captain Alyssa Healy is in doubt for the remainder of the Ashes series and potentially the rest of the season as she battles a foot issue that has forced Cricket Australia to delay the naming of its squad for the MCG Test.

Healy was ruled out of Monday night’s T20 international against England at the SCG and is no guarantee to feature again in the multi-format series.

CA had been due to release its squad for the pink-ball Test on Monday night but Healy’s latest issue has led to an announcement being postponed indefinitely.

Healy has been battling injury since hurting her foot during the T20 World Cup last year.

She was then ruled out of the back end of the Women’s Big Bash League season with a knee issue and missed the one-day internationals against India before handing wicketkeeping duties to Beth Mooney in the subsequent series against New Zealand.

While Mooney could don the gloves in Healy’s absence during the Test – beginning in Melbourne on January 30 – specialist wicketkeepers Nicole Faltum and Georgia Redmayne could also come into the frame for what is the first women’s Test at the MCG since 1948-49.

“Alyssa has developed mid-foot soreness on the same side as her previous plantar fascia injury following the ODI series,” CA said ahead of the game on Monday night.

“She is currently being managed in a boot and will not be available for this evening’s game. Cricket Australia’s medical team is consulting with specialists to develop an appropriate management plan over the coming days. Her availability for the remainder of the series will be assessed as more information becomes available.”

Healy, 34, is due to head to India for the Women’s Premier League after he MCG Test before a T20 series in NZ in March.
