COOMERA Waters whizkid Liam Hydes is on the fast track to success as he races towards a piece of national karting history.
After little more than 12 months in the sport, the 14-year-old will become the first Australian to race in the Sodi World Series junior final at this year’s event in Venice, Italy from June 14-16.
The Silkwood School student is the no.1 ranked Sodi junior driver in the country and sits 27th on the international standings after a remarkable debut season in which he finished on the podium in all 18 races, including 12 wins.
Having taken part in his first senior race at Pimpama’s Slideways Go Karting last month, Liam is now ready to face the world’s best youngsters.
“Going into the senior races, it gives him such great experience getting ready for world finals in Italy, where it will be fierce competition against all the young European drivers,” mother Nicole said.
“He is quicker than most of the senior drivers on his home track (at Slideways), holding the current track record of any junior or senior.
“Liam has overcome many challenges and now to have this incredible opportunity as the very first and only Australian junior at the world finals, it is a huge honour and achievement. With his love, passion and dedication for karting, Liam wants to forge a career as a racing driver and following in the steps of Lewis Hamilton.
“Anything is possible.”
