The 2018 Commonwealth Games helped put the Gold Coast on the map in areas it previously did not feature. But the city also helped put the beloved event back into spotlight. Here’s how.

THE 2018 Commonwealth Games helped put the Gold Coast on the map in areas it previously did not feature.
However, the Games’ overriding boss says the city did just as much to help the event.
“Together, we christened Gold Coast 2018 the ‘Games of Firsts’,” said Commonwealth Games Federation President Louise Martin CBE in a speech this year.

“Our decision to develop the sports program for Gold Coast 2018 to close the medal gap for women was a global sporting first — making sure men and women competed for an equal number of Commonwealth medals for the first-time ever at a major multi-sports event.”
In another new initiative at GC2018, 19 women coaches from 11 countries participated in a groundbreaking program of mentoring, learning and on-the-ground training across 12 different sports.

Also, for the first time para-athletes competed alongside able-bodied athletes to make the most integrated games ever. It also meant more Commonwealth records than ever before were broken.
Five different countries — the British Virgin Islands, Cook Islands, Dominica, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu — also won their first Commonwealth Games medals.
