THE Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games volunteer uniforms have been unveiled today.
The vibrant fluoro and “very GC” blue and yellow uniforms were showcased at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre this afternoon as training for thousands of staff, volunteers and some contractors commenced.
About 4500 members of the Games workforce packed centre that will house the main media centre, basketball finals and netball come GC2018, for the first of three ‘full house’ sessions.
Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said today marked 144 days until the Games and the unveiling of the uniforms was a “significant milestone”.
“Well, the brief was bold, bright, relaxed and they absolutely nailed it
“Congratulations to Hard Yakka for absolutely ensuring we have the best uniform for our volunteers and our GOLDOC team at the Commonwealth Games here on the Gold Coast next year.
“For the very first time our GOLDOC staff and our volunteers will all be wearing the same uniform and we’ve done that deliberately, because we know that our volunteers will be the face of the Games — they are what people will remember.
“We know they (volunteers) are going to be the Games shapers. they are the ones who are going to make our Commonwealth Games deliver on our promise to be the best Commonwealth Games ever.
“It (the uniform) looks amazing.
“I think Borobi is a bit jealous right now.
“A lot of hard yakka has been put in but Hard Yakka has delivered.”
Former Titans star and Gold Coast local Mat Rogers, who was on the Gold Coasters showcasing the new uniforms, said they were “very Gold Coast”.
“It’s kind of like active wear,” he said.
“You see most people getting around in active wear nowadays, so that’s a good thing in terms of comfort and I think it (the uniform) looks fantastic.
“You certainly want the workforce to standout — particularly the volunteers that are out and about and working with our spectators.
“I’ve had the pleasure of wearing a lot of uniforms over my lifetime in many different teams and I feel really proud to wear this, I feel like I’m representing Australia again.
“It feels great — it feels like the perfect look, the perfect fit for what’s going to be a fantastic Games here on the Coast.”
There were 47,000 applications for the 15,000 volunteer positions.
