OH NO SHE DIDN’T!
GIRLFRIEND of the year award goes to Gold Coast model Gabby Epstein who fashioned herself with boyfriend James Roberts’ face at the 50m swimming final.
Gabby said he sent her the photo just after he won the 50m freestyle trial at the Australian championships in February.
The photo was a funny face he pulled as a kid all the time, Gabby said giggling.
“We send each other embarrassing snaps 24/7 and so I thought why not put one on a T-shirt,” Epstein said.
“You should’ve seen his face when he saw me, he just said ‘what have you done’ — but family thought that it was so funny, and that’s all that matters.
“I made sure that he didn’t see it until after his race because I didn’t want him diving in and thinking about that.”
Gabby has confirmed this is only the first of many and that they are only going to get worse from here on.
SPOTTED
SOUTH African-born New Zealand weightlifter Tracey Lambrechs was spotted in the audience at famed Broadbeach cabaret restaurant Dracula’s, at Broadbeach, on Tuesday night. Lambrechs, who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 2015 Pacific Games, placed fifth this week in the 90kg women’s weightlifting final. ATG hears New Zealand weightlifter Bailey Rogers, who placed fourth in the 75kg women’s weightlifting final at Carrara on Sunday, was also in the house on Tuesday.
ON POINT
GOLD Coast’s Cross Promotions owner Billy Cross is having a great Games. His new bar Nineteen on The Star’s rooftop, open nightly, hosted the marquee Australian swim team after-party on Tuesday. Days earlier Cross, whose company donates to the Gold Coast Community Fund and domestic violence groups, was honoured to be asked to help with medal and Borobis presentations to the champion Australian men’s four by 100-metre freestylers.

THE stunning projections on to The Star’s original hotel building at Broadbeach have been stopping people in the street. They have included depictions of athletes in action but the one causing most people to pause and take a photo appears to be the streaming showcase of the flags of every single country and territory in the Commonwealth
GUTTER
WATCHING Aussie boxer Clay Waterman take on Zambia’s Mbachi Kaong was the main event for fight fans at Oxenford on Wednesday night.
But hearing spectators mock the encouragement yelled by Koang’s coaches, which was not in English, with a series of disrespectful clicks and whistles during the quieter periods of the bout was an absolute disgrace.
Koang’s calling the judge’s decision against him “bull***” drew criticism — but ATG reckons that group of men, who seemed to think they were pretty funny, were the biggest losers on the night.
HUSH HUSH
AT this week’s funeral of the city’s first Meter Maid, Annette Bryant — described as a “woman of limitless beauty” by her son, who was it that blurted out to which male attendee during the wake: “Remember when I used to have to sneak out of your bathroom window?” Both laughed at the statement overheard by many.
