The Gold Coast Rollers have signed a guard compared to two US greats for the NBL1 North season.
Amercian Charles Smith is the eye-catching talent who hopes to shoot the lights out on the Glitter Strip with the Gold Coast Rollers NBL1 side.
The guard joins with lofty expectations after he drew comparisons to four-time NBA all-star Devin Booker and 10-time NBA all-star and former NBA three-point king Ray Allen during his time in college.
Throughout his time in the NCAA system, he made a name as a dangerous weapon from beyond the arc and was one of the leading three-point shooters in the American Conference during his sophomore year with the SMU Mustangs.
However, despite the expectations which come with these comparisons and credentials, Smith remains focused on himself rather than letting outside noise in.
“I try to just work on my own game versus trying to copy professionals that are there already,” he said.
“I’m a good shooter … I can knock it down for sure.
“I will do what I can, we’ve got a good action, good teammates to give me the ball so I can hopefully knock them down for everybody.
“I think I’m a really confident capable defender and I am kind of just everywhere.
“I make a lot of winning plays, bring some winning attitude to the team.”
Smith revealed his excitement to suit up for the Rollers, with their competition kicking off on Thursday.
“I am happy to get down here and get to work with everybody and see what good things we can do this season,” he said.
“It’s always nice weather, better than where I was before this, it’s a nice community of people.
“Everybody’s really welcoming, they want me to come in and play my game and help them help me get us all to where we want to go to this season.”
Smith hopes his NCAA and international experience can help improve the squad as whole.
“There are a lot of things that are normal to me in America that may be a little bit different for them in Australia,” he said.
“So getting a good mix of what I know and they know can definitely bring our team to the next level.”
