BRAZILIAN Chloe Calmon produced the goods when it mattered most to win her first Australian Open Longboard Open title at Kingscliff yesterday.

In glassy, clean, wave conditions, Calmon dominated the final with top scores of 7.17 and 6.17 in a round of the Longboard Qualifying Series.

“I was just trying to have fun and enjoy what I was doing the most and surfing and competing is what I love to do,” Calmon said.

“I was nervous in my heats but my strategy for this one was to be calm in my first wave which paid off with my biggest score.

“It is my first time in Australia and my first two events of the year, so I am pretty excited.”

Calmon beat Japan’s Hiroka Yoshikawa and relegated reigning world campion American Rachael Tilley to third in the final.

The men’s LQS final was fought out by American Taylor Jensen and Harley Ingleby, of Coffs Harbour.

The pair went wave to wave with a series of high-performance and progressive manoeuvres equally balanced with traditional nose riding.

It was Jensen who prevailed through his positive dominant manoeuvres with a combination of hang fives and hang tens as well as power, speed and control through his many cutbacks and re-entries.

“I’m super stoked to start off the year with a win,” Jensen said. “Last year I ended with a second place in China (in the world final) and it was pretty frustrating so having a win here to get things back on track is great.”
