Trainer reveals petty reason for Deontay Wilder’s post-fight Tyson Fury snub

Tyson Fury slammed Deontay Wilder for snubbing him after their heavyweight clash, and the American’s excuse won’t wash with the “Gypsy King”.

Deontay Wilder refused to show Tyson Fury the respect he deserved in the ring after their blockbuster fight on Sunday because he still alleges his rival tried to cheat.

That was the reason given by Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott, who watched his man bravely take the “Gypsy King” 11 rounds before being brutally knocked out in their trilogy bout.

But afterwards, the American heavyweight chose to snub Fury’s attempt to make peace and shake hands.

Scott said Wilder still holds ill-will towards the British WBC champion, after accusing him of cheating in their rematch — which Fury won via seventh round TKO in February 2020.

The trainer told EsNews: “Deontay, he obviously looks at Fury as a man he had serious issues with concerning some certain allegations that was out.

“And certain things that he has actually seen with his own eyes. Tonight, after they released all that energy, he still felt the way he felt.”

Fury drew with Wilder in a split decision draw in 2018 and then brilliantly won the rematch in seven rounds last year. But the Bronze Bomber refused to accept the result and blamed the loss on everything but a masterclass in boxing. His excuses varied from Fury fighting with weights in his gloves to someone spiking his water.

These were accusations Wilder stuck by, but never proved.

Even before the trilogy fight on the weekend, Fury’s gloves were cut open to check the padding in them. They were cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and later used to knock Wilder down three times, as the killer blow landed in the penultimate round.

Fury made a clear attempt to embrace the fallen ex-champ, but was given the cold shoulder. New footage released on Monday showed Fury approach Wilder in his corner to thank him for the epic fight and offer his commiserations.

But according to the 33-year-old, Wilder was having none of it and refused to put the pair’s infamous dislike for each other behind them. No handshake was evident and Fury could be heard saying “you lost fair and square” as he walked away.

“I said, ‘Well done.’ And he said, ‘I don’t wanna show any sportsmanship or respect’. I said, ‘No problem’,” Fury said about the incident. “I was very surprised by that but he’s a sore loser, an idiot.

“To be a top fighting man, you’ve got to show guts and respect and he couldn’t do it tonight. And that’s it.

“I’m a sportsman and I went over to him to show some love and respect and he didn’t want to give it back.

“He couldn’t do it so I’ll pray for him. I’m just thankful we all got out the fight in one piece and go home to our lovely families.

“All the allegations that were made towards me … we fought like two warriors in there and I went over to shake his hand and say, ‘Well done’ and he was like, ‘No, I don’t respect you’.

“I was like, ‘How can you say I cheated when you know in your heart, and your full team knows, that you just got beaten fair and square’.

“He’s just a sore loser in boxing. I’m sure he’s not the first one and he won’t be the last one.”
