New club Geelong United will open the new WNBL season against former champions Townsville Fire to launch the 2024-25 season on October 30.
The WNBL this morning has released its fixture for the new season, with Australia’s longest running elite women’s sporting competition to tip off its 45th edition.
Geelong enter the league this season after replacing the Melbourne Boomers and it will be an immediate baptism of Fire, with last season’s minor premiers Townsville coming down to tip off the season at Geelong Arena on Wednesday October 30.
The Fire, champions in 2022/23, were tipped to go all the way again last season but fell in the semi-finals to the Perth Lynx.
Defending champions Southside Flyers have been handed one of the toughest assignments in the league, heading to Perth to take on the Lynx in a grand final rematch for round one, while Bendigo and Sydney Flames will also host matches.
The competition has again attracted some of the best players in the world, including Olympians from the Opals and Gangurrus 3x3 teams and imports from the WNBA.
WNBL boss Christy Collier-Hill, said she was delighted to release the 2024-25 fixture.
“In unveiling the fixture today, we are excited for the fans to see what the 45th season has to offer, the incredible matchups, the rivalries, the world class players, this season will be special” Collier-Hill said.
“To have Olympians from the Opals and Gangurrus as well as WNBA stars playing, continues to position the WNBL as one of the best leagues in the world.”
