Australian Josh Giddey has continued his hot NBA form with another triple double as he achieved another milestone that puts him alongside some basketball greats.

Giddey had 28 points, 11 assists and 16 rebounds in Chicago’s 119-111 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday (AEST) and was the highest scorer for the Bulls.

Miami and Chicago are locked into the play-in tournament but the victory saw the Bulls leapfrog the Heat into the ninth seed in the Eastern Conference — they will likely meet again to fight for a spot in the NBA playoffs.

Giddey notched up his seventh triple double of the season and the 18th of his career as he also racked up two steals and three blocks in another stat stuffing performance.

Giddey’s efforts also saw him join Nikola Jokic and LeBron James as the only players this season to reach 1000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists this season.

In Chicago Bulls history, only Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and now Giddey have achieved that statistical milestone.

ESPN’s Olgun Uluc described it as a “monster” game by Giddey.

Bulls insider K.C. Johnson wrote: “Can’t emphasise this enough: The difference between the Josh Giddey who started the season and the Josh Giddey the Bulls see consistently now is enormous. And may be expensive.”

Since the NBA All-Star break in February, Giddey has averaged 21.2 points, 10.7 rebounds. 9.3 assists and 46 per cent shooting accuracy from three-point range.

The 22-year-old has thrived in a bigger role for the Bulls since Zach Lavine was traded to the Sacramento Kings and Giddey has been handed the keys to Chicago’s offence as the main ball handler.

Giddey was disappointed to be traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder last season and the Thunder are championship contenders this season.

But Giddey has played so well in the past two months that he could well have made himself hundreds of millions of dollars in the process.

His salary this season is A$13.3 million, but that could skyrocket in the off-season if the Bulls re-sign him as they look to rebuild the franchise around a young core featuring rookie Matas Buzelis and Coby White.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has predicted Giddey to command a contract of around USD $30 million (A$47 million) per season.

“This is the kind of play I thought he (Giddey) would have all year,” Windhorst said in March.

“His role was sort of limited. After the trades they’ve opened up his role (and) this is the player he can be.

“The going rate for a starting point guard in the NBA is around thirty million dollars. He is their starter.

“If you look at a guy like Immanuel Quickley, he got five years and $162 million (A$257 million) — that’s about $32 million a year. I’m sure Josh Giddey’s hoping for something like that.

“I will bet on Josh Giddey and I will bet on him getting a very long contract, whether he gets it this year or has to wait another year and end up as an unrestricted free agent.”

The Chicago Bulls take on the Washington Wizards and Philadelpia 76ers in their last two games of the regular season before they fight for a playoffs spot in the play-in tournament.
