The Australian Age Championships are well underway, with swimmers already putting their hands up for World Junior Champs and Paris 2024 selection. See the best performers here.

Swimming teacher warns of blue outfits

Australia’s best junior swimmers have begun making waves at the 2023 Australian Age Championships at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Running from April 7 to 15, the event acts as trials for the 2023 World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships held in Israel in September.

Australian coaches Gary Barclay and Leigh Nugent have broken down some of the names already on their radar ahead of Worlds, along with several athletes who only just put their name on the map after this week.

Stay up to date with highlights, top performers, and full results from the week here.

Top performers from the week so far

Olivia Wunsch

Age: 16

Club: Carlile, NSW

Exciting Sydney teenager Olivia Wunsch is tipped to be on the cusp of Paris 2024 selection. Just three days into the meet, Wunsch is competing well in the freestyle and medley events, having won the 16 girls 50m freestyle in 24.85, just 0.17 outside Cate Campbell’s 2009 Australian All-Comers mark of 24.68.

Wunsch is ranked 15th in the world for the 50m free, even in senior swimming, but it remains one of the hardest events to break into.

Ammundsen has impressed this week after winning the 15 girls 100m backstroke in 102.04.

Olympia Pope

Age: 14

Lillie McPherson

Age: 14

Club: Manly, NSW

It’s unlikely McPherson would make this years’ Worlds team, but she has certainly put her name out there to selectors this week. The 14-year-old won the 100m butterfly in 100.08, a very good time for her age.

Mikayla Bird

Age: 15

Club: Bond Uni, QLD

15-year-old Mikayla Bird is a five time Australian Champion at 2022 Australian Age Championships, and has already begun to replicate that success winning the 200m butterfly in 2:12.76.

Gideon Burnes

Age: 17

Club: Bond University, QLD

Before this week, Burnes wasn’t a name selectors had on their mind. Now, it’s one they won’t be forgetting any time soon after coming from nowhere to win the 100m and 200m breaststroke for 17 years boys.

Getting into the Bond program has been a big boost for him, and one should expect big improvements this season looking towards the Junior World Champs.

Josh Kerr

Age: 17

Club: Manly, NSW

Kerr is another talent to emerge from this weeks’ competition. He swam very well in the medley, and has made his known looking toward the Junior World Champs.

Ed Somerville

Age: 17

Club: Brisbane Grammar, QLD

Ed Sommerville won the 17 years 200m freestyle event, and with the 100m event yet to play out, is expected to do just as well.

THURSDAY’S BEST MOMENTS

Darwin has a new teen swimming sensation in Macey Sheridan, who scored her fifth gold medal on Thursday on night seven of the Aussie Age Championships.

13-year-old Sheridan posted wins in the 50m backstroke in 24.59, 100m backstroke in 1:03.69, the 200m backstroke in 2:19.70 as well as gold medals in the 50m freestyle in 26.63, and the 50m butterfly in 27.96.

And with the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley to come there could be more gold to squeeze into her luggage when she heads home to the top end.

Rackley’s Ike Martinez and Manly’s Lillie McPherson also lit up the pool, with Martinez backing up his win in the 16 years 100m butterfly in 55.71, to take the 400m freestyle in 3:57.16.

Not long after, Martinez managed to defeat tough regional NSW racer Oscar Kreutzberger from North Albury in the 400m freestyle, surging past him in the last lap to clock in 3:57.16 to Kreutzberger’s 3:57.78.

Manly pocket rocket Lillie McPherson took her own double that night, first in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle to add to her earlier wins in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Bond breaststroker Gideon Burnes added the 17 years 50m breaststroke to claim the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke treble to continue his rise towards the open ranks.

Olivia Wunsch has continued to impress both spectators and selectors at the Australian Age Championships, winning her third title in 24 hours on Wednesday, with a tight win over Jessica Cole to win the 16 yars 100m butterfly in 59.39.

It comes after a spectacular start to her campaign start on Tuesday night when she won the 200IM-50m freestyle double – the 50m freestyle in 24.85 – a time that would have seen her finish fifth in the Commonwealth Games and time only beaten by two other 16-year-old Australians – Cate Campbell and her London 2012 Olympic team mate Yolane Kukla.

Two months after breaking a decades-old record held by Olympic legend Leisel Jones, Olympia Pope is continuing to dominate the water at the Australian Age Championships at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

14-year-old Pope became Queensland Champion in February when she swum a time of 32.71 to win the 14 years girls 50m breaststroke at the State Sprints meet, knocking off Jones’ 23 year old record.

Now, the former Somerset swimmer is dominating in new colours for Miami, kicking off the competition with a personal best time of 1:09.26 in the 14 years girls 100m breaststroke, after clocking 1:09.89 in her morning preliminary swim.

Pope will be looking to dominate the stroke across the week, with the 50m breaststroke final on Monday night and 200m breaststroke on Wednesday.

In a major steal, Chandler’s Anders McAlpine beat Commonwealth Games champion and Bond athlete Flynn Southam to win the 17 years boys 400m freestyle with a time of 3:52.50.

McAlpine is a dominating force in his own right, as the Australian Champion in the 16 years 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle and a member of the Aussie Junior Dolphins to attend the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii.

Fellow Bond swimmer Gideon Burnes clocked a personal best to win the 17 years boys 100m breaststroke in 1:02.40.

St Peters Western trio Benjamin Goedemans, Amelia Weber and Indianna Cameron gave the defending champion club a flying start on night three, with all three claiming gold in their respective races.

Goedemans took out the 18 years boys 400m freestyle final in personal best time of 3:52.34, with club mate Robert Thorpe finishing second and Miami swimmer Noah Kamprad in third.

Meanwhile, St Peters swim captain Weber won the 17 years girls 400m freestyle in 4:13.64 and 15-year-old Cameron won the 15 years girls 200IM in 2:20.03.

In the 13 years girls 100m butterfly, Sunshine Coast Grammar’s Brydee Reid surprised even herself to take out the race with just 0.25 separating the first four places, in a time of 1:04.71.

Round out the day, Sydney’s Northern Beaches club Warringah Aquatic scored a double gold with Lachlan Davies winning the 14 years 200m backstroke in 2:07.81 and Samuel Higgs winning the 15 years 200m IM in 2:05.39.

SATURDAY’S BEST MOMENTS

It took just 90 minutes for a pair of Sunshine Coast Grammar rising stars to prove they were forces to be reckoned with on the Gold Coast, with a champion from Helensvale all that stood between them and a remarkable surge.

Grace Brimelow (S8) and Kael Thompson (S14) will bring three gold medals and a silver back to the Sunshine Coast on the back of an emphatic Saturday morning at the 2023 Multi-Class Australian Age Championships.

It was Thompson, coached by Charles Barry at Grammar, who chimed in with an impressive double in the 16-18 years 200m freestyle (2:19.82) – backing up to win the 50m backstroke.

While her 15-year-old Grammar teammate Brimelow started proceedings with an impressive win in the 12-15 years 400m freestyle, she met a formidable adversary in Helensvale gun and Gold Coast Bulletin Woman of the Year 2021 ‘Champion of Sport’ winner Montana Atkinson (S14) in the 200m freestyle – the latter who stormed home to triumph.

Atkinson, who picked up bronze in the 100m freestyle, finished the 200m showcase in 2:21.81, while she charged home to another win in the 100m butterfly in 1:10.92.

The success will no doubt instil a wealth of confidence into her as she strives for a Paris Paralympics berth.

It continued a strong weekend from Helensvale’s swimmers, with Lilly-Anne Gould (S14) victorious in the 12-13 years 50m butterfly on Friday night.

Meanwhile in the boys breaststroke, it was local Samuel Gould (S14) who shone in the 16-18 years event, timed at 34.67 to claim the title.

Gould, coached by Jon Cook and Fabio Dalessandro at their Gold Coast HQ at Helensvale, produced two more gold medal performances to win the 100m backstroke in 1:08.80 and the 50m butterfly in 29.42.

Meanwhile, Engadine’s Darren Sisman (S14) and Flinders’ Callum Simpson (S8) showed why they will be ones to watch with three impressive wins each in the boys events.

Simpson won a coveted 200-400m freestyle double – the 400m first up in 4:48.04 and the 200m in 2:16.45, before winning the 200 individual medley in 2:43.96.

Sisman added his own touch of class winning the 200m freestyle, clocking 2:01.16, before winning the 200 individual medley in 2:21.41 and the 100m butterfly in 1:02.48.

In the 12-13 years girls events it was 12-year-old Warringah Aquatic product Gemma Selleck (S9) who took out Saturday’s 50m backstroke final in 41.86 and the 100m breaststroke in 1:40.92.

Beau Matthews then claimed the 100m breaststroke for 12-13s in 1:25.53, the 200 individual medley in 2:35.10 and the 100m butterfly in 1:10.59, with Declan Budd winning gold in the 14-15 years 100m butterfly in 1:05.04. Jordan Berryman (S8) won the 16-18 years girls 400m freestyle.
